How Did the Electrical South Dakota Come About?

Electricity was first brought to the state of South Dakota in 1882 when a dynamo power plant was established in Brookings. The plant used a rotating armature to produce direct current, which was more efficient than the alternating current that was then in use. The plant operated until 1901, when it was replaced by a hydroelectric plant on the White River. In 1917, the state’s first commercial power plant opened in Rapid City using hydroelectric power. Today, South Dakota has one of the most diversified electrical grids in the United States, with sources including coal, natural gas, renewable energy (solar and wind), and nuclear power.
