History of Brookings
The origins of Brookings can be traced back to the early 1870s when a small community called Burnsville was established in southeastern South Dakota. The community was named for then- Secretary of War William Tecumseh Sherman and incorporated on December 10, 1878. In 1881, a post office was established and the town’s name was changed to Brookings. A year later, the railroad arrived and Brookings emerged as an important junction point along the east-west line.
In 1889, a sawmill was built and the town’s population began to grow rapidly. The production of lumber led to other businesses opening up in Brookings, including a flour mill, livery stable, bank, and newspaper. By 1900, Brookings had a population of 1,500.
During World War I , Brookings served as one of several supply points for troops fighting in Europe. After the war ended, however, many of these businesses went out of business because there wasn’t enough demand for their products.
In 1933, the construction bond campaign that helped build many public works projects across America launched in Brookings with a speech by Franklin D. Roosevelt . The campaign generated enough money to build local schools and churches as well as improve infrastructure such as streets and bridges.
Today, Electrical Brookings South Dakota is still an important junction point along the east-west line; however, its economy is based more on agriculture now than it is on manufacturing or commerce.
